Korsakoff’s syndrome is a form of alcohol-related brain damage (ARBD) and accounts for around 10% of dementias in younger people. It is caused by a lack of vitamin B1 (thiamine). It is most commonly associated with alcohol abuse but can also be caused by excessive vomiting in pregnancy (hyperemesis gravidarum), gastric bands and bulimia. Dementia is usually associated with old age or Alzheimer’s disease. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, the rate of dementia disease accounts for 60 to 80 percent of all cases.
